Drones have long been effectively and safely used for inspections in the wind turbine industry. It is well-established that regular cleaning of wind turbine blades significantly enhances generating efficiency by mitigating losses caused by particulate and algae deposits on the blades' leading edges and aerofoil profiles. However, the high costs and safety issues associated with current methods (helicopters, high lift platforms, rope access) can inhibit best maintenance practices.

 

The development of specialized wind turbine cleaning drones, equipped with advanced safety anti-collision systems and LiDAR 3D, approved by the CAA to fly within 5 meters of tall structures, can recover lost megawatt-hour (MWhr) generation and extend the lifespan of wind turbine blades by approximately 15%.
